Retainers, the most important part in maintaining your straight smile!

Types of Retainers:

There are a few different types of retainers, both removable and fixed. The most commonly used retainers are

  1. Clear retainer
  2. Hawley retainer
  3. Fixed retainer

Why Do Patients Need to Wear Retainers?

The bone surrounding your teeth is constantly remodeling. Once your teeth have been aligned in the proper position, they will have a tendency to keep moving. A retainer keeps teeth in their existing position, wherever your braces or clear aligners moved them. Changes in tooth position occur over your lifetime, which is a natural occurrence. Do not be alarmed if small changes in tooth position occur over time. Call the office if your retainer is lost, broken or not fitting properly, or if your fixed retainer loosens, as your teeth may shift out of alignment.

How Long Will I Need to Wear My Retainer?

Removable retainers are worn nightly for the rest of your life. As long as you want your teeth to be maintained in proper alignment, you should wear your retainer.

How Do I Take Care of My Retainer?

You can clean your retainers after each meal and rinse your mouth out with water prior to replacing your retainers in your mouth. We recommend cleaning your retainer with cool soapy water, avoiding hot water.  Keep your retainers in their case when they are not benign worn. Be very gentle when handing your retainers, as they are fragile and can break. It is important to take care of your retainers, so they can take care of your straight teeth!
