Orthodontic Retainers:
Protecting Your New Smile
After orthodontic treatment is complete, orthodontic retainers are essential to keep your teeth in their corrected positions. Teeth naturally want to shift over time, so wearing a retainer helps maintain the results of braces or clear aligner treatment and protect your investment in a healthy, straight smile.
Why Are Retainers Important?
Once braces or aligners are removed, the bone and surrounding tissues need time to stabilize. Without proper retainer wear, teeth can gradually move back to their original positions, causing crowding or spacing to return. Consistent retainer wear is the key to long-lasting orthodontic results.
Types of Orthodontic Retainers:
There are two main types of retainers, and Dr. Ava will recommend the best option based on your individual needs:
Removable Retainers:
Removable retainers are custom-made to fit your mouth and are easy to take in and out. These include:
- Hawley retainers: made of acrylic and metal
- Clear plastic retainers: which are transparent, and similar in appearance to clear aligners
Both options are designed to comfortably hold your teeth in place while allowing for proper cleaning and oral hygiene.
Fixed (Permanent) Retainers:
Fixed retainers are bonded to the inside (tongue side) of the teeth, making them invisible from the outside. These are often recommended for patients at higher risk of tooth movement and provide continuous retention without needing to remember daily wear.
How Long Do You Need to Wear a Retainer?
After orthodontic treatment, retainers are typically worn full-time (day and night) for a period recommended by Dr. Ava. Over time, most patients transition to nighttime-only wear. Long-term or lifelong retainer use is advised to prevent unwanted tooth movement or relapse.
What Happens If You Don’t Wear Your Retainer?
Not wearing your retainer as instructed can cause teeth to shift, potentially undoing months or years of orthodontic treatment. Wearing your retainer consistently helps ensure your smile stays straight, healthy, and beautiful for years to come.
How do I clean my retainer?
Removable retainers should be cleaned daily using a soft bristled toothbrush and cool water. Avoid hot water, which can warp plastic retainers. You may also try various retainer cleaning solutions to help prevent plaque buildup and odors.
